When Xbox Game Pass was first introduced, many interested parties showed concern for the health of the video games industry, fearing that offering such a subscription service would cannibalise sales and could lead to platform favouritism. According to one studio, this is not the case, with the recently-released Everspace 2 said to be better across the board thanks to its Game Pass partnership.
Everspace 2 is a third-person, space-based looter-shooter set in an open-world action-RPG environment. Releasing today on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the team at Rockfish Games took to Microsoft's Xbox Wire Blog to detail how the title’s day-one Game Pass deal helped to make the game “better” for everyone, saying:
“Ironically, not only is it good for Xbox and PC users, it’s also good for players on other platforms: everyone gets a better game because of Xbox Game Pass. The extra funding helps us stay independent, and we can deliver the game when we think it’s ready – and it is.”
Of course, with this interview being conducted by Microsoft themselves, it would have been unusual for the studio to say otherwise. That said, if we were to take Rockfish Games on their word then it is encouraging to see that Xbox Game Pass is helping smaller studios while still allowing the titles to release on other competing platforms.
