Supermarkets Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's are all set to begin pushing games in their local convenience stores, as well as the smaller outlets. This is thought to be an effort to cash in on the problems with other high street retailers Blockbuster and HMV.
“We already sell major releases from convenience stores,” said Sainsbury’s games boss Gurdeep Hunjan. “And we are also looking at others.”
Asda however, is unlikely to push Wii U games much more than it is already. We saw last week how it became the first in the UK to drop its Basic Pack to under £200, prompting Amazon to follow suit. This made it the cheapest in the UK high street market, though ShopTo still maintains the cheapest overall price.
Morrisons games buyer Simon Millea said of the news: “Morrisons currently has a range of DVDs in convenience stores, and we have supported triple-A games launches such as FIFA and CoD in our M Local Stores last year. This activity will more than likely be planned again this year.”
Other Supermarkets like Tesco already support much wider game sale options in store and it pledged last year to become a prime example of high street game retail. Whether the other supermarkets will increase their range of available titles is yet to be seen.
KitGuru Says: It's good that convenience with game buying will increase, but the prices you'll find at supermarkets will be horrific. The selection will also be horrible so I'm sure the big gamers among the KG readers won't be too pleased with this news. Maybe I'm wrong though. Let us know in the comments or on Facebook.
