Apple have been at the forefont of panel technology for some time now with their Retina displays and it looks as if they may be pushing to get a 4k screen fitted into their future iTV product in either 2013 or 2014.
The Apple iTV has never been confirmed by Apple, however industry insiders say the release date has fallen from later this year to 2013 or possibly 2014. Apple are apparently in talks with Foxconn about the upcoming television set and they want to use a state of the art 4k ULTRA HD panel in the unit.
Apple are still currently deciding who will supply the 3840×2160 resolution panels. Industry insiders say that production of 4K sets is already close to full capacity in 2013. Reports from Digitimes claim that many companies who can make the panels are already at full workload handling their iOS devices.
LG Display look to be favourite for production, if they can manufacture enough panels in the second half of 2013. Early 2014 may be the best ‘guesstimate' now for release. The biggest concern will be the price of the television set, because 4K screens are still very expensive to produce, often costing $20,000.
Kitguru says: Will Apple lead the way with mass produced 4K televisions in late 2013 early 2014?
Haha, it will probably have a 720p display and they will say something like ‘we achieved a technology that makes 720p look better than 4k’ then sell it for like $3000 😛
