Razer announces its second generation Kishi smartphone controller

Today’s smartphones are powerful enough to run all kinds of games, from console-like experiences in Genshin Impact to the dozens of systems able to be emulated through the likes of Retroarch. Unfortunately, smartphone controllers have historically left a lot to be desired. The Razer Kishi was one such controller. Finally however, Razer has announced a version 2.

The Razer Kishi V2 is a horizontal USB-C gaming controller which intends to bring “a console-class gameplay experience to your smartphone”. When compared to the first Kishi, the V2 shows a whole host of improvements.

Firstly, the design has been overhauled entirely, now featuring “a stable, extendable bridge that perfectly holds most popular Android smartphones, providing a secure fit that won’t come loose while you game”. The first Kishi controller was much less stable, utilising more flexible materials.

Thanks to the inclusion of a USB-C connection, latency is minimised, while also allowing for passthrough charging. Other added conveniences include a new dedicated screenshot and video record button as well as a Razer Nexus app launch button – offering a much more console-like experience when the controller is connected.

Android phones are not all one size, which was an issue many came across when trying to use the first Razer Kishi. Fortunately, the V2 comes with adaptable inserts for compatibility with some cases and screen protectors. While not every android device will fit, significantly more will now be able to.

The final major change is in the design of the button hardware. While the first Kishi utilised membrane buttons and d-pad, the V2 switches it up with microswitch buttons and a D-pad with mechanical clicks. Unlike many of the other changes, this one is more down to preference –  though the feedback of the buttons on the V2 should be more tactile.

The Razer Kishi V2 is available right now for Android and will set you back £99.99. The full list of officially supported devices can be found HERE.
