Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 8+ and Snapdragon 7 for next-gen smartphones

Ahead of Computex next week, Qualcomm is unveiling its next generation Snapdragon processors. The next wave of high-tier Android smartphones will be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, with the former focused on pushing the boundaries of mobile performance, and the latter focused on bringing in-demand features and performance gains to a wider market.

Starting off with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will be adopted by leading global OEMs and brands including ASUS ROG, Black Shark, HONOR, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, OSOM, realme, RedMagic, Redmi, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE. The first Android smartphones sporting the new chip should be available in Q3 2022.

These new Snapdragon 8+ devices will benefit from the full suite of “Snapdragon Elite Gaming” features, including low response times, HDR visuals, and faster GPU speeds. Compared to the previous generation, the new chip has a 10% faster GPU, while consuming 30% less power. Aside from gaming, the chip also supports other new features, like 8K/HDR video, improved efficiency thanks to the Qualcomm AI Engine, 5G connectivity and more.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is a tier below the Snapdragon 8+. While it isn't quite as powerful, it still packs many of Qualcomm's best features, including a speedy Adreno GPU with Frame Motion Engine technology, which can double frame rates and upscale content without increasing power consumption.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 will be available starting in Q2 2022, and we can expect to see new phones from Honor, Oppo and Xiaomi, all sporting the new chip.
