The Tamagotchi returns, why did it take so long?

First released on a key chain back in 1996, the Tamagotchi quickly became a sensation with kids around the world. You could pet it, clean up its poop, feed it… and that's about it. But it was awesome, for 1996. Now Bandai, the company behind the original creation, is re-releasing the Tamagotchi in app form, with iOS and Android versions expected to be available soon.

The new version will come with extra features – you might expect that with a 16 year development window – such as mini games, but players will also have the option of a retro mode, which sees the graphics and features return to that of their 1996 counterpart.

Tamagotchi
I was also a big fan of Sonic Adventure Chao races. And Pokemon. I'm so hardcore.

“The original Tamagotchi was first released 16 years ago and took the world by storm. Everyone had a Tamagotchi and loved taking care of their digital pets,” Bandai said in a statement (via The Telegraph.) “The new Tamagotchi app will feature the same gameplay you know and love with a number of exciting new features.”

The new version will be known as Tamagotchi L.i.f.e, which stands for “love is fun everywhere.” An excellent translation I'm sure.

KitGuru Says: I know we might be all a bit older than we were in 1996, but I bet a few will download this. Come on, who's man enough to admit they still like this sort of thing?
