MacBook Air Solid State drives released by Toshiba

For those of you who have been following the news lately you will have seen that Apple's new MacBook Air uses a new SSD system. Toshiba have released a new series of drives for the laptops.

The new Blade X Gale SSD series is now available for market sales and delivers sizes of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. The components offers speeds up to 220MB/s read and 180MB/s write. This falls short of the latest mainstream SSD speeds from units such as those powered by the Sandforce controller. The 64GB and 128GB units are only 2.2mm thick, but the 256GB is slightly thicker.

“Delivering a product that enables superior user experience in a smaller footprint is the ultimate goal,” noted Scott Nelson, vice president, Memory Business Unit, Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. “The density of MLC NAND enables the creation of smaller form factor high density storage solutions, and Toshiba, as the technology leader for NAND storage solutions, will continue to innovate in this space.”
