iTunes to update previews to 90 seconds

Music labels have been informed that Apple are due to overhaul their free 30 second song preview. Reports have detailed that Apple have asked music labels to increase song preview duration to 90 seconds.

Before people in the UK get excited, this change is apparently only going to happen in the USA for the time being. Apple sent out a letter to music labels, seen below.

Song previews of tracks longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds may be up to 90 seconds long rather than 30 seconds. Longer song previews will certainly help customers to judge if the track they are hearing is worth a purchase and is part of Apple's new directive to get more people to purchase music online. While price reductions would be the best course of action to take, there is no information to show pricing will change in the near future.

  1. big deal, start dropping the prices if you want sales to increase. a 90 second preview of a song wont help me buy more.

  2. I like the idea of longer previews, but I dont think it will make me buy more from itunes.
