Apple CEO Cook says company will manufacture Macs in USA

Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that Apple will spend more than $100 million next year on building Macintosh computers in America. They are moving a portion of their manufacturing away from China, the country which handles the majority of their product range.

Cook spoke to Bloomberg Businessweek and said “Next year we’re going to bring some production to the U.S. This doesn’t mean that Apple will do it ourselves, but we’ll be working with people and we’ll be investing our money.”

Apple are known as the ‘All American' company and until the late 1990's did manufacture a lot of their products in the country, however they shifted to ASIA to reduce costs. Cheaper labour helps increase profit margins.

While $100 million sounds like a large amount of money, it is a tiny portion of their $121.3 billion in cash and is unlikely to affect profit margins.

The move however will be seen as positive, as it will help employ people in America.

Tim Cook said “I don’t think we have a responsibility to create a certain kind of job. But I think we do have a responsibility to create jobs.”

Bloomberg added “While Cook didn’t outline where the manufacturing would happen or how much would be produced in the U.S., he said the company will work with partners and that the operations would include more than just final assembly.”

Kitguru says: The American people will welcome the move.
