The Apple TV may be getting a price bump

Apple hasn't updated its Apple TV set top box for quite some time now. As a result, the price is fairly low, coming in at $99 for a brand new model. We have been hearing about the new Apple TV for some time now and aside from the updated internals, we can also expect an updated price when it launches in October.

According to sources speaking with 9to5Mac, the next Apple TV will launch at either $149 or $199, rather than the $99 price point consumers are currently used to. However, the final price hasn't been nailed down just yet.

Obviously news of a price bump isn't too surprising, and the currently proposed prices are still cheaper than that of the original Apple TV. In addition, the set top box may soon run a version of iOS in an effort to give it access to more apps, it may also sport a much more powerful A8 chip.

Right now, the new Apple TV is expected to come out in October, though it may possibly be announced in September. It was initially supposed to launch with Apple's own TV streaming service, though negotiations with TV networks has delayed that until next year.

KitGuru Says: It sounds like Apple wants to re-purpose the Apple TV for more than just video streaming this year. With a chip as powerful as the A8 inside, it should be able to run some of the more intensive apps and games currently available on the iPhones or iPads.
