The iPad Air 2 has a primary 8MP camera – which Apple have named the iSight camera. This takes photos at a native image resolution of 3264×2448. There's also a 1.2MP secondary camera on the front – the Facetime HD camera, as it is known.
The iSight camera on the Air 2 has had its sensor upgraded – meaning pixels are larger, so lower-light images should be of a higher standard. There is also a whole host of new features thanks to iOS 8's camera app – including time lapse and a burst mode.
Anyway, on to the images themselves. It is safe to say the images are of a very good standard for an 8MP tablet. Colours are rich and vibrant, and are well-detailed. Obviously the photos are not as eye-popping as what we would see from a 13MP+ smartphone camera, but they are still nice and sharp.
The HDR mode works well, creating well-balanced lighting throughout the images. Our one gripe would be that occasionally the focus point shifted too soon, and our resulting images were ever so slightly out of focus. Have just a small bit of care when you are photographing, though, and there'll be no problem.
For a tablet, the camera is very impressive – especially considering it does not protrude from the iPad's chassis, which many mobile cameras are starting to do these days.
