Banking malware targets Android users

Android has been reeling recently, after being targeted by several viruses and trojans. The latest spyware application known as Zitmo has been altered to target the Android Platform.

Axelle Apvrille, an antivirus analyst for Fortinet has written a blog post on the subject.

She says “Lately, there’s been an active discussion on technical forums regarding ZeuS targetting Android users. We finally managed to get our hands on the mobile sample the ZeuS PC trojans are propagating.
Actually, it is not a new sample and has been detected under several names (Android.Trojan.SmsSpy.B, Trojan-Spy.AndroidOS.Smser.a, Andr/SMSRep-B), but it is far more scary when propagated by the ZeuS gang.

The malware poses as a banking activation application”

This software is particularly dangerous, as it runs in the background waiting for incoming SMS messages and then forwards them to a remote server on the web. The ZeuS group can then steal the mTANs.

Kitguru says: Bad news for Android users. Be on the lookout in case you get compromised.

  1. the nature of the android open style platform is weak for security. they need tighter restrictions. Apple aren’t perfect, but their business model is much safer.

  2. I don’t know about that. As long as this malware does not propagate onto the Android Market there’s not much difference. Market is pretty open but I’m sure they’re scanning for malware as vigorously as anyone before letting software onto there. With the restrictions on the iPhone store users might be more inclined to look for software from alternative sources. Whereas even though it’s a much more open field on the Android for alternative ROM’s and whatever, not that many are really going that path without knowing there’s a substantial risk involved.
