Google has quietly stopped selling the Nexus Player

It looks like Google has quietly taken itself out of the TV set-top box game for now as it is no longer selling the Nexus Player on the Google Store. While the player can currently be found at a few places, some retailers have been out of stock for months so we may not be seeing the Nexus Player come back.

The Nexus Player was Google's Android TV box, which was meant to bring some Android games and apps to the big screen. However, Android TV can be found on a lot of new smart TVs these days, which may have lowered demand for a separate box.

A spokesperson from Google commented on the removal (via: TechRadar), saying that while the Nexus Player isn't available on its own store for now, it will continue to support Android TV: “Nexus Player is still available on some retail sites. Android TV continues to be a living room favourite as one of the best smart TV experiences. We are pleased with the success and have seen millions of activations so far.”

KitGuru Says: There is a lot of competition in the Android TV set-top box market but given that most TVs these days come with some ‘Smart' features, the demand doesn't seem to be at the level Google may have hoped for. Do any of you have an Android TV box? Would you have bought one if your TV had Android TV pre-installed?
