Samsung’s foldable Galaxy X handset tipped for 2019 launch at MWC

While Samsung seemed confident in launching its first foldable smartphone this year, the tentatively titled Galaxy X handset is now believed to be making its way early in 2019. Insider sources specifically tip 2019’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show as the one to watch for more details.

Foldable technology has been teased significantly over the past few years, with none making their way to the market so far. Samsung has always seemed the closest, missing its tipped 2017 release. Now, it looks like the company is gearing up for production as South Korean publisher The Bell reports that Samsung has changed the device’s internal name from “Valley” to “Winner.

Considering that display components are rumoured to not be ready until November, the debut is expected to coincide with next year’s MWC, with a full launch in the following February. Production numbers are tipped to be limited due to the experimental nature of the device, while the Samsung Galaxy S10 will be the bigger money maker for the company.

Falling in line with a previous rumour, insiders are pointing towards a less flexible format in favour of three 3.5-inch foldable displays that can be opened and closed like a book. This is a far cry from the malleable displays showcased previously, but could iron out some of the developmental problems by keeping a similar firmness to current form factors.

The rumours surrounding specifications have changed numerous times over the years, so it’s best to take this information with a pinch of salt until official confirmation comes from the company. If the launch date is correct, it looks like we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out what Samsung has in store for the Galaxy X.

KitGuru Says: Depending on how Samsung polishes the device, it does sound like it would be a bit of a pain to carry around. Then again, I wasn’t initially a fan of the transition towards touchscreens over physical keypads, so it’s best to wait and see. Would you consider a foldable Galaxy X or is the supposedly traditional Galaxy S10 more your style?
