Xenoblade studio is working on a new game engine

If Monolith Soft is known for anything, it’s being able to get the most out of Nintendo’s relatively modest console hardware. From the original Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii to aiding with the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Monolith Soft’s technical knowhow is well recognised. It is therefore interesting to see that the team are working on a new in-house game engine.

In a recent interview by the Japanese publication CGWorld (and translated by Automaton-Media), both the COO and lead programmer for Monolith Soft – Tetsuya Takahashi and Michihiko Inaba respectively – sat down to discuss their technical experiences at the studio.

As part of this, the pair revealed that they are working on a new game engine thanks to their newly founded in-house R&D department, with Takahashi stating “For the kind of games we are currently developing, we do not have the option of using third-party game engines. In-house engines are easier to customize to meet our needs.”

Currently, the engine used for all the Xenoblade Chronicles titles have been tweaked from the original Wii release back in 2010 – and so it is understandably due for an update.

Given just what Monolith Soft have been able to do with the likes of the Wii, Wii U and Switch, it’ll be interesting to see what they are capable of with the upcoming Switch successor.
