Upcoming Astro Bot game was almost open-world

Despite PlayStation claiming a quitter year for first-party releases, the announcement of a full fledged Astro Bot game for the PS5 during the company’s last State of Play took many by surprise in the best way. While the upcoming 3D platformer is keeping things more traditional with a set of 80 levels, the game was almost an open-world title.

Discussing the exciting upcoming release of Team Asobi’s ‘Astro Bot’ with Edge Magazine, creative director Nicholas Doucet revealed that the platformer almost ended up as an open-world title, saying: “[we] did consider, at first: should this be an open-world game?”

Ultimately, Doucet and the team decided against it, opting instead “for a level-based approach…because that was the one that gave us the most control over the game's variety.”

It’s not often that you get a 3D platformer in an open world, and so such a concept from Team Asobi would have been interesting. That said, with this being the first major release for Astro Bot, it is perhaps best that the team stuck with what they knew best.
