Ubisoft’s open-world Avatar game finally shown off

Just as the sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar has been in production for much longer than anyone could have anticipated, so too has the Ubisoft game based on the property. Announced to be in development all the way back in early 2017, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has finally been shown off.

At the recent Ubisoft Forward, the publisher gave fans a proper first look at Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Developed by Massive Entertainment, known for making The Division series (and also confirmed to be working on a Star Wars game), Frontiers of Pandora was originally announced all the way back in March of 2017.

Though it had been 4 years since the game was last seen, the cinematic trailer confirmed a number of details, including the fact that Frontiers of Pandora is set to launch in 2022 exclusively for next-gen systems (as well as PC, Stadia and Luna).

While the exact set-up of the game was hard to parse from the cinematic trailer, more details were provided following the conclusion of Ubisoft’s showcase, including that the game will take on a first-person perspective; you’ll play as a Na’vi; the story is standalone, meaning it won’t connect to the upcoming films; and the game will be open world.

The world of Avatar is impressive, and so it will be interesting to see how Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment have managed to fit Pandora into an open world format which not only includes breadth, but high levels of elevation. Hopefully a gameplay trailer will follow soon enough.
