The Callisto Protocol is no longer set in the PUBG universe

When The Callisto Protocol was first announced back during the 2020 Game Awards, the game was met with a somewhat mixed response. While the spiritual successor to the survival horror series ‘Dead Space’ looked like it was following in the footsteps of its predecessor nicely, The Callisto Protocol was said to be somehow related to the PUBG universe. Now, this decision has been reversed.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Glen Schofield, the CEO of Striking Distance Studios and director of The Callisto Protocol revealed that “@CallistoTheGame is its own story and world. It no longer takes place in the PUBG Universe.”

Explaining this change of heart, Schofield claimed that “[The Callisto Protocol] was originally part of the PUBG timeline, but grew into its own world. PUBG is awesome, & we will still have little surprises for fans, but [The Callisto Protocol] is its own world, story and universe.”

When The Callisto Protocol was first announced, there was nothing which even hinted at the idea that the game was based in the world of PUBG. Of course, the game was said to be set 300 years after PUBG, but again, all that meant was that the two games seemed to share very little identity, and was simply being attached to the name for the sake of marketing.

Of course, much of this is mere speculation, but in the wake of Schofield’s announcement, it seems even the developers at Striking Distance Studios thought the two shared little in common. Being detached from the PUBG name can only be a good thing, as the developers are now allowed much greater creative freedom due to the detachment from a known IP. Hopefully the final product matches the newly adjusted expectations.
