State of Decay 2 will get its final update later this year

Released all the way back in 2018, State of Decay 2 is the latest title from Undead Labs. Shortly following the game’s release, the studio was acquired by Microsoft – absorbing them into Xbox Games Studios. Despite announcing State of Decay 3 back in 2020, the team have continued to update the current zombie survival shooter – finally announcing the conclusion of its post-launch support later this year.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the team at Undead Labs shared the following statement: “Since 2018, we've had the honor and privilege of supporting State of Decay 2 with nearly forty updates and expansions. New modes, maps, difficulties, stories, characters, weapons, cosmetics, bounties, vehicles, events, traits and more.”

It continues, “While you've enjoyed State of Decay 2 for many years, you may have heard that we are also hard at work on the next evolution of the franchise! Our ambition is to make the greatest zombie survival sim in the franchise, and to do so, we'll be shifting our focus and resources to making the upcoming third installment, State of Decay 3.”

The final update for State of Decay 2 is set to arrive later this year, aiming to “fix some longstanding issues, implement additional quality of life improvements, and permanently unlock seasonal or otherwise previously-gated content.”

Given the fact that State of Decay 3 was announced 4 years ago, it’s somewhat surprising to see the team having continued to support the second entry for so long. Hopefully Undead Labs will now finally be able to fully focus on the upcoming 3rd entry.
