Sony plans to ship a record-breaking number of PS5s in 2023

After a somewhat slow start due component supply issues, Sony announced at the beginning of the year that PS5 consoles should no longer be in short supply. We have seen this pan out, with the system’s sales skyrocketing over the past few months – and breaking records in the process. This trajectory seems to not be slowing down any time soon, with Sony planning to ship over 25 million PS5s in 2023.

As part of Sony’s most recent fiscal report, the console manufacturer spoke on their plans for the PS5 across 2023, claiming that “We aim to continuously accelerate penetration of PS5 and aim for PS5 sell-in units for the current fiscal year to be 25 million units, the highest ever for any PS console in history.”

For comparison’s sake, during the 2020 fiscal year, Sony shifted 7.8 million PS5 consoles. The following year saw an additional 11.5 million sold. FY2022 has so far been the biggest year for the PS5, selling over 19.1 million units. With the current state of the PS5’s performance over the past few months, it does not seem unfeasible for Sony to shift 25 million consoles during FY2023.

While 25 million would be a record for Sony, we have seen other consoles sell far more during a single year period – specifically the Nintendo Switch. Undoubtedly aided by the global pandemic, during 2020 Nintendo managed to shift a whopping 28.8 million units.

Of course, the PS5 costs quite a bit more than the Switch, and so the comparison is not 1-to-1, but still, it will be interesting to see whether the PS5 hits this 25 million figure in 2023. It might even surpass it! Time will tell.
