Sony confirms it is researching wireless VR

In just two short months, Sony’s next-generation PlayStation VR2 headset will be released, improving upon the first iteration in literally every way possible. Even so, the headset will still need to be wired to the PlayStation in order to work (though admittedly with only one cable). In discussing this, Sony revealed that they are researching the future potential of wireless VR.

In an interview conducted by Japanese magazine Famitsu (and translated by mixed-news)  Hideaki Nishino, the SVP of Platform Experience at Sony explained the reasoning behind keeping the PSVR2 as a wired device while also revealing that the team is exploring the potential for future wireless options, saying:

“We also understand that going wireless will give you another experience, so we’re always looking at all possibilities and doing technical research. However, there is still the issue of how far the cable solution can be replaced with a wireless one in terms of performance.”

While there currently exists a number of wireless standalone VR headsets which can also connect via cable, it seems Sony is going all-in on ensuring that PSVR2 offers the most immersive experience possible – and if that means a cable is needed, then so be it.

Of course, we will have to wait until the headset is in the hands of players to determine whether staying wired was the right choice for PSVR2. Luckily, there isn’t too much longer to wait now.
