Returnal was one of 2021’s surprise hits, offering highly fun and engaging gameplay all the while creating a world that was both visually interesting and fun to play through. While developers at Housemarque revealed that their next game will not be Returnal 2, it seems as though fans are getting Returnal 1.5 for free.

Announced at the most recent Sony State of Play livestream, Returnal’s Ascension 3.0 update was revealed and brings with it a whole host of new content.

So far, it has been confirmed that the update will include:

• Multiplayer (Co-Op)
• New levels
• New Boss
• New Items
• New narrative sequences

Going into slightly more detail, the co-op mode will only be available during the main campaign, with the newly announced Tower of Sisyphus as well as the previous House sequences and Challenge Mode only available in single player. Still, that is dozens of hours worth of co-op.

Speaking of the Tower, it is said to be “an ascending gauntlet of increasingly dangerous phases, with each containing twenty floors. Upon entry, eliminate all the enemies on each floor and secure your passage to the next one up. Just be ready for what you might encounter within…”

As someone who put many hours into Returnal, this update is quite exciting, especially the Tower of Sisyphus, which appears to be leaning in fully into the roguelike nature of the game. Returnal’s 3.0 Ascension update will go live on the 22nd of March.
