Returnal Game Director departs from Housemarque

Returnal represents one of the most unique and interesting new IPs to come out of PlayStation Studios since the launch of the PS5, with the 3rd-person shooter rogue-like blending excellent gameplay with a mysterious world and narrative alongside an award-winning soundtrack. In bittersweet news, the Game Director for Returnal has announced his departure from the studio.

In a post published on the studio’s blog, Harry Krueger – the Game Director of Returnal – reflected on his decade at Housemarque, saying:

“During my 14 years at Housemarque, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work on one dream project after another, and had the privilege of working alongside some truly talented and wonderful people along the way. It's been an honor to accompany Housemarque on this journey, witnessing our growth from our smaller arcade-inspired titles to the magnificent heights we reached with Returnal. We really shook the pillars of heaven together, and I will forever be proud of all the amazing things we’ve accomplished as a studio.”

Though he did not state what his next steps are, Krueger did briefly address his departure, saying “Departing from Housemarque was a very difficult decision for me, but I’m leaving the company with nothing but deep gratitude for the past, and a glowing optimism for the future – with an exciting new project in the works, a fantastic team that’s stronger than ever, and the continuous support of Sony and PlayStation Studios, I know that Housemarque’s brightest chapter has yet to be written.”

Returnal truly helped to put Housemarque on the map, and it is likely that without it Sony would not have ended up acquiring the studio. It is a bittersweet moment to see Krueger moving away from the studio, but it will be highly interesting to see what he does next.
