RE4 Remake helps push Resident Evil franchise to 150 million sales

The Resident Evil series is by far Capcom’s biggest, with the nearly 30-year-old franchise continuing to see new entries released at a regular cadence to great fanfare and commercial success. As part of the publisher’s most recent fiscal report, Capcom revealed that total sales for the Resident Evil franchise has now surpassed 150 million total copies sold.

Capcom recently released their financial results for the 2nd Quarter of FY2023, revealing that the long-anticipated Resident Evil 4 Remake has sold 5.45 million copies since its launch on the 24th of March. This has helped push the total franchise sales for Resident Evil to over 150 million, further cementing it as the best-selling series in Capcom’s repertoire (with Monster Hunter coming in second at nearly 100 million total units sold).

Additionally, Capcom’s other major release for the year – Street Fighter 6 – has been performing well, having sold just shy of 2.5 million copies since its release back in June. Considering the fact that the publisher is hoping to sell 10 million copies throughout SF6’s entire lifecycle, these early sales figures represent a strong start for the fighting game.

The original Resident Evil 4 has sold a total of 12.3 million copies across its many releases and re-releases and so while the remake has quite a ways to go to reach equivalent figures, the recently-released Separate Ways DLC and upcoming PSVR2 update will hopefully ensure that the title has legs. It will be interesting to see how long it takes RE4 Remake to surpass the original.
