Rabbids are now being used in an NFT Metaverse game

Ubisoft’s pseudo-mascot the Rabbids have not had the best video game portfolio, but recent successes such as Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle – and the announcement of its sequel – meant that the Rabbids cache was in good standing. Unfortunately, they are now being used to promote an NFT-filled Metaverse game.

‘The Sandbox’ is a “part virtual real estate, part amusement park” which “fully embraces the idea of the metaverse as a continuous shared digital space where worlds and heroes collide to make magic.”

Alongside 200 other partners, Ubisoft has now joined with a Rabbids-themed map as part of Ubisoft LAND, with a representative saying:

“We’re excited to bring the Rabbids to The Sandbox community and to empower players to create their own original experiences incorporating elements of our gaming IP. We can’t wait to see how they make the Rabbids’ world their own. The Sandbox is an obvious new fun playground addition to the long list of Rabbids world invasions, and a great opportunity for Ubisoft to experiment a metaverse experience for its brands.”

It will be interesting to see what Ubisoft LAND actually is and what can be done there. Of course, the elephant in the room is the fact that as with many Metaverse experiments, The Sandbox does utilise NFTs. This is not an issue for Ubisoft, which is already in bed with the controversial digital ledger.

While other gaming companies shy away from adopting the technology, Ubisoft continues to go all-in. It will be curious to see whether this ultimately pays off for the publisher.
