PSVR2 rumoured to release in Q1 2023

The first generation PlayStation VR headset launched during a tough time for the burgeoning platform. Based on older VR tech, the PSVR was quickly left behind technologically. The past few months however have seen details surrounding the upcoming PSVR2 revealed, except for the device’s release date – until now.

PSVR without Parole is a VR-focused YouTube channel which has in the past accurately leaked details regarding both the PSVR2 headset as well as the headlining VR title ‘Horizon Call of the Mountain’. Now, according to their sources, PSVR without Parole is claiming that the upcoming PSVR2 will launch in Q1 2023.

Q1 2023 would land between January and the end of March of next year, and would be an appropriate time to launch the headset. Being a wired headset, the device is reliant on the power of the PS5 hardware to push the headset’s high resolution VR display. Most recent figures put the PS5 at having shipped 17 million units. With an extra year on the market, and supply shortages (hopefully) being resolved by 2023, PSVR2 should be able to come out of the gate swinging.

While price will still be a huge factor in the success of the headset, releasing PSVR2 a few short years after the PS5’s launch should allow developers plenty of time to get their hands on the hardware, and learn how to squeeze the most performance out of the console before tackling the medium of VR. With standalone and wireless VR headsets being all the rage, it will be interesting to see how Sony positions the PSVR2 and its wired setup.
