PSVR2 production reportedly cut by 20%

Sony’s PlayStation VR2 launched in late February to high praise across the board with many deeming it to be the best virtual reality headset available. Unfortunately, it seems despite the critical reception Sony’s latest headset is off to somewhat of a slow start, with a new report claiming that the headset has seen its 2023 production numbers cut by 20%.

Ming-Chi Kuo is a trusted and well-respected leaker within the Apple community. In discussing the potential success of Apple’s long-rumoured and upcoming AR/VR headset, Kuo spoke on the rest of the VR industry, claiming that “The product lifecycle shipment for Meta’s Quest Pro is only around 300,000 units” alongside the fact that “Pico (China’s largest AR/VR headset brand) shipments in 2022 were more than 40% lower than expected.”

For our purposes the most interesting piece of VR hardware currently is the recently-released PSVR2 – though according to Kuo “Sony has cut its 2023 production plan for the PS VR2 by about 20%.”

While a far cry for the 50% reduction in production which we heard from other sources, this also runs counter to Sony’s own claims which previously stated that no production cuts are happening – though Sony’s statement admittedly hails from back in January meaning things could have changed in the months following.

Despite the increasing interest in virtual reality, the PSVR2 was always going to be a hard sell, and so hopefully these early figures do not dissuade Sony from continuing to support PSVR2 with new games, features and more. We will have to wait and see.
