OD will be Kojima’s most experimental game yet

During the 2023 Game Awards, industry legend Hideo Kojima appeared on stage alongside horror filmmaker Jordan Peele to offer further details on their Xbox console exclusive ‘OD’. While we still know very little about the game/experience, Kojima has claimed that OD will be one of his most experimental games ever.

Kojima has always been seen as a rather quirky creator, with the director often breaking the 4th wall in order to progress through his games. Pretty much every franchise Kojima has worked on features some level of experimentation, giving the creator’s games their own unique sense of identity. Speaking on his status as an experimenter, Kojima said:

“It seems I have been acknowledged by creating games that go against the current of the times, such as ‘hide-and-seek’ games [Metal Gear] where you sneak into a building without being detected by the enemy, or ‘delivery games’ [Death Stranding] where you enjoy moving around in an open world.”

In reference to perhaps his most experimental game so far – 2003’s Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand – Kojima had this to say: “For me, the most experimental game was ‘defeating vampires outside your house’ using actual sunlight around you. It was met with fierce opposition from the staff and even within the company. In that sense, ‘OD’ is just as different.”

So, while we still know next to nothing about the upcoming OD, at the very least, it seems as though it will be Kojima going ‘full Kojima’ – an exciting prospect indeed. It will be interesting to see what exactly OD ends up being.
