Next Battlefield could feature “Most Realistic Destruction Effects” ever

For many years, EA’s Battlefield franchise managed to set itself apart from Actvision’s Call of Duty through a number of ways including their focus on high-quality destructibility. Over the past many entries we have seen this unique-selling-point fall to the wayside. Fortunately, it seems as though DICE and EA are prepping to bring destructibility back in a major way.

As discovered by Insider-Gaming, following the less-than-stellar destruction seen in the most recent Battlefields, EA and DICE appear to be doubling down on what used to make the series unique.

As part of a job listing for a VFX Director, Ripple Effect (previously known as DICE LA) is looking for a Senior 3D Artist to “help us create the most realistic and exciting destruction effects in the industry,” with one of the stated roles being to “create optimised and hyper-realistic in-game VFX.”

As mentioned, Battlefield used to be all about destructibility, with the likes of Bad Company 2 being heralded for this all the way back in 2010. Unfortunately, the importance of destructible environments lessened with each successive Battlefield entry – nowadays being barely a factor.

While the highly-criticised Battlefield 2042 has slowly but surely been improved over time, the promise of a Battlefield game once again featuring industry-leading destruction could be enough to make the waning franchise big once again. We will have to wait and see.
