New Fortnite update further hints at upcoming first-person mode

Back in June of last year we reported that Fortnite looked to be getting a first-person mode in a future update, thanks to the work of diligent dataminers. Deemed to be in early development at the time, a new update has indicated that the first-person mode could be coming to Fortnite sooner rather than later.

As discovered by Twitter user ‘AyeTSG’ and reported by Fortnite leaker ‘ShiinaBR’, “In today's update, Epic Games has added new files for a first-person mode in Battle Royale.”

Little else was offered in the way of new information, but it is interesting to see Epic Games continuing to work on this new perspective.

Adding a first-person mode is not as simple as changing the camera position; it requires potentially hundreds of new bespoke first-person animations as well as a whole new aiming and recoil system. Furthermore, depending on how the mode works, each gun will need to be able to aim down sight – with the model accurately showcasing this.

These are but a few of the considerations required to make a proper first-person mode work well, especially in a competitive multiplayer title. That being said, Epic Games has in the past shown willingness to overhaul many aspects of the game, and so it seems it will only be a matter of time before a first-person mode is added into Fortnite.
