MultiVersus loses 99% of its daily player base

Following the overwhelming success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, we witnessed many developers and publishers take heavy inspiration for their own titles, with a number of Smash Bros. “clones” released in the years since – to various degrees of success. One of the standouts was Warner Bros, free-to-play ‘MultiVersus’. Unfortunately, while it originally launched to great success, the game has now seen its player base drop by 99%.

As reported by VGC, following its rapid rise to success, MultiVersus seems to have had just as quick of a downfall. Shortly following its launch on the 19th of July 2022, MultiVersus peaked with a concurrent Steam player count of 153,433 users on the 27th of July.

Since then, the game has only continued to fall in popularity, with MultiVersus dropping to an all-time low of fewer than 1000 concurrent players at its daily peak on the 13th of February – marking a 99% drop in users when compared to the launch period.

While it is possible that the decline is due simply to live-service fatigue, MultiVersus has had a troubled second season, with only one new character so far being added during it (and that was months ago now).

While not impossible for the game to pick up steam moving forward, it would also not be surprising to see Warner Bros. can the game sooner rather than later. We will have to wait and see.
