Mortal Kombat 11 reportedly made over half a Billion Dollars in profit

Mortal Kombat is one of the biggest names in fighting games, with the 30-year old franchise continuing to be stronger than ever decades on from its initial release. Ahead of the expected official announcement of Mortal Kombat 12, it has been revealed that the most recent entry – MK11 – has generated over $500 Million in pure profit.

As discovered by the publication Tech4Gamers, a LinkedIn profile pertaining to the ex-Global Brand Manager for Mortal Kombat and Multiversus claims that 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11 has “generated over $500MM in LTD profit” as of February 2022.

While this may initially sound somewhat farfetched, since its release in April of 2019 Mortal Kombat 11 has officially sold over 15 million copies, with the game being offered across pretty much every platform possible (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC and even Nintendo Switch).

What’s more, MK11 did release a decent amount of DLC and even included a Fortnite-like premium store – meaning the game had plenty of revenue/profit streams, making this $500 million figure much more plausible.

With Mortal Kombat 11 making so much money for Warner Bros. it’s not surprising to see that the team at NetherRealm are moving straight from MK11 to MK12 – assuming the leaks and rumours are true of course. While the success of Mortal Kombat is exciting, hopefully Warner Bros. don’t end up taking away the wrong lessons from this. We will have to wait and see.
