Announced all the way back in 2016 – and released in 2019 – Dauntless was an Epic Games Store Exclusive Monster-Hunter-like title. While it could not compare to Capcom’s series, the game was enjoyed well enough. Unfortunately, its refreshed arrival onto Steam last year was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews – with the game now officially set to be shut down.
Making the sudden announcement on Twitter, the official game's page shared the news of its impending closure, writing “Important update: Dauntless is shutting down on May 29, 2025. Dauntless will receive no additional content or updates. Dauntless will no longer be available to play on and after May 29, 2025 at 11:45PM PST. Thanks to all for being a part of the Dauntless journey.”
While a pretty sudden announcement, this seemed to be an inevitability following its failed Steam launch late last year, where the game was slammed for its introduction of loot boxes among other unsavoury practices.
The timing of this announcement is also curious as it comes just ahead of the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds. That said, given just how big of a game Wilds is likely to be, Dauntless would have struggled to maintain relevancy in the wake of its release regardless, and so it is perhaps for the best that they were able to announce this on their own terms.
Hopefully we get a more candid explanation for its closure over the coming weeks.
