Modern Warfare II has largest opening weekend in franchise history

Over the past few days, we have seen a number of sales figures released for Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, with the game breaking concurrent user records on Steam as well as being the fastest-selling Call of Duty on the PlayStation Store. Now, Activision themselves have revealed that Call of Duty Modern Warfare II has achieved the largest opening weekend in the franchise’s history.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Call of Duty account said “To our community – THANK YOU for making #ModernWarfare2 the #1 Call of Duty launch of all-time! And we're just getting started.”

As part of a press release published to Business Wire, it was revealed that the game had made over $800 million in revenue within the game’s first 3 days on the market following its 28th of October release.

Speaking on this success, the general manager for Call of Duty – Johanna Faries – said “Thank you, Call of Duty players, for making Modern Warfare II’s launch one for the record books as well as the highest grossing entertainment opening of the year. It is our honor and privilege to deliver such a historic launch weekend for the best fans in the world.”

As mentioned, Modern Warfare II managed to become the highest grossing entertainment launch of the year, surpassing the likes of Box Office giants such as Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With MWII planned to see support for two years, it will be interesting to see just how much more the game is set to grow.
