Media Molecule was almost shut down by Sony

Just as has been the case with pretty much every game publisher, Sony recently announced a massive number of layoffs – including the closure of PlayStation’s London Studio. Though safe for now, it seems as though Media Molecule was very close to also getting the chop.

As revealed by the senior editor of Kotaku ‘Ethan Gach’ via Twitter, while London Studio was ultimately chosen to be shut down by Sony, the UK-based Media Molecule was right up there on the list of potential closures, saying:

“Over the holiday break a source told me that London Studio and Media Molecule were highest on the list of possible closures.”

For the uninitiated, Media Molecule is best known for creating the popular littleBIgPlanet series of games. Unfortunately, the studio struggled to find success outside of this series, with the likes of Tearaway and Dreams failing to live up to Sony’s expectations.

With Media Molecule’s support for Dreams ending last year, it will be interesting to see what the team is planning to work on next – and whether they will pivot away from producing more creatively niche titles.
