Layers of Fears gets new name and release window

Back in June of last year the psychological horror focused Bloober Team announced Layers of Fears: A remake / continuation of the studio’s most well-known original IP. Interestingly, alongside a new announcement of the game’s release window, the team also revealed a slightly altered name for the game.

Originally announced as ‘Layers of Fears’ Bloober Team released a new trailer for the upcoming title revealing not only the game’s release window – June 2023 – but also the fact that it will no longer be called Layers of Fears, and will instead take the name of the first game in the series – that being the more singular ‘Layers of Fear.’

The situation surrounding Layers of Fears was already somewhat cloudy, with the game being both a reimagining of the first two games in Unreal Engine 5 while also adding a bunch of new content. The name change has led to further confusion, though in response to one fan, Bloober Team explained their approach to this upcoming game, saying:

“The game is neither a sequel nor a remake. We've chosen a rather original approach, where we think of the game as a chronicle, a horror reimagined, something that mixes both old and new content, reimagined and remade. The original game came out in 2016, and we have grown a lot as a studio since then. Now we feel we're mature enough to make a return to the franchise we all internally love. It's not just a simple remaster, it is so much more and players can expect extra new content.”

It will be highly interesting to see what Bloober Team ultimately does with Layers of Fear – and just how different it will be from the original games.
