Job listing suggests that SEGA is working on a multiplayer Sonic game

With the success of Sonic Frontiers, all eyes are on the blue blur’s next game and what it might be about. According to a new job listing posted by SEGA, the next Sonic game could in fact feature multiplayer.

As discovered and translated by ResetEra user ‘Dooble’, SEGA recently published an open job listing for a Client Programmer for the Sonic series. In the ‘Welcome Skills’ sections, it lists:

  • Practical experience with Unreal Engine 4
  • Action game development experience
  • Network game production experience (P2P online battles, etc.)

If these details relate to the next mainline Sonic title then there is the possibility that a lot of things will be changing, including the game engine itself – switching from SEGA’s own ‘Hedgehog Engine 2’ to the much more ubiquitous Unreal Engine. Furthermore, Sonic Frontiers is a single player game and so the idea of a mainline Sonic game featuring ‘P2P online battles’ would certainly be quite a shift – especially since Sonic Frontiers has proven to be a success for the company.

Of course, the most likely explanation is that these details pertain to a spin-off title. While nowadays it is much less common, during Sonic’s heights SEGA were pumping out side game after side game – and so it is possible this is what we are seeing here. It could even simply be for the cyclical Olympic Games. We will have to wait and see.
