Back at the start of 2026, it was reported that Sony had cast Jason Momoa to star in the console maker’s upcoming Helldivers film. Set to come to cinemas in November of next year, the Justin Lin-directed movie seems to have run into some setbacks, with its lead actor reportedly no longer attached to the project.
Back in 2025, Sony officially announced that they were producing a film based on the highly successful Helldivers 2. While little was revealed at the time, the publication Deadline later reported that the film would be directed by Justin Lin (of Fast and Furious fame), with Jason Momoa (known for the likes of Fast and Furious; Dune; Aquaman and A Minecraft Movie) taking on the lead role.
Unfortunately, plans seem to have changed, with Deadline now revealing that Momoa is no longer involved in the project, citing the reason for his departure as being “unknown.”
In a bit of positive news, the project appears to still be “very much alive” with Sony now “searching for their new star.”
As mentioned, the Helldivers film was originally planned to release in November of 2027. With Momoa now exiting the project and no replacement currently in place, it begs the question as to whether the Helldivers film will wind up being delayed. It will be interesting to see who they end up getting as the new lead.
