Insomniac Games is making a Wolverine game

Insomniac Games pushed superhero video games to new heights with 2018’s Spider-Man. They quickly followed it up in 2020 with Spider-Man Miles Morales. In a surprise announcement during the PlayStation showcase, it was officially announced that the team would be developing a Wolverine game.

While Insomniac Games are working hard on Spider-Man 2, the team has also been tasked with one of the other most popular Marvel characters -specifically Wolverine. Though the reveal trailer offered little more than a short teaser, the PlayStation Blog features more information.

According to the Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations at Insomniac Games “Back when we were working on Marvel’s Spider-Man, there would be times where all of us—Insomniac, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and Marvel—would brainstorm together about the future beyond the web-slinger. And even in those early discussions, Wolverine continually came up as the character we’d be really stoked to work on together. Fast-forward a couple years and we’re suddenly standing in front of Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel formally pitching a PlayStation 5 game starring the adamantium-clawed Mutant!”

Marvel’s Wolverine is a standalone game where “our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit. Even though Marvel’s Wolverine is very early in development, from what I’ve seen of its emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay (see what I did there?), the team is already creating something truly special.”

While a Spider-Man 2 was inevitable, to see Insomniac Games being given the rights to another one of Marvel’s biggest properties is testament to the quality of the studio’s work on Spider-Man. It will be interesting to see how the game differs from Spider-Man – and who is playing the iconic character.
