Industry insider believes there won’t be a PlayStation 5 Pro

In most console generations we have seen systems updated and refreshed halfway through their life cycles, offering a slimmer, cheaper or in some other way different console to the launch variants. Surprisingly, last generation we saw the introduction of a PS4 Pro – being the first PlayStation system to get a mid-gen upgrade. For better or for worse, it seems as though the PS5 will not get a Pro version, skipping instead straight to the PS6.

‘Insider-Gaming’ owner and general industry insider Tom Henderson took to Twitter to share the current internal discussions happening over at Sony regarding a potential PS5 refresh, saying:

“I don't think it's a pro or slim, My understanding is that it's just ‘gen 2’ of the regular PS5”. Explaining the differences further, Henderson continued “The normal PS5 will cease production at the end of this year and the new model will start in April and begin selling in September.”

Going back to the discussion surrounding what little evidence there is of a PS5 Pro, Henderson stated: “All I can say is that I've heard more about the PS6 than a PS5 Pro.”

As mentioned by Henderson, there are currently two PS5 SKU – the PS5 regular and PS5 Digital. It seems as though next year both models will be replaced by the new PS5 with a detachable disc, rendering the old model discontinued (perhaps in a similar manner to the original Switch vs the red box Switches produced later).
