Housemarque announces Returnal successor with new IP ‘Saros’

While Housemarque has existed for 30 years now, the studio saw its biggest hit with the release of 2021’s excellent 3rd person roguelike shooter Returnal. Now an official part of PlayStation, the studio has announced their latest endeavour: Saros – “the ultimate evolution of the Housemarque gameplay-first experience.”

Making the announcement during last night’s State of Play and expanded upon through the PlayStation Blog, Housemarque’s Creative Director Gregory Louden officially unveiled Saros.

Described as “the ultimate evolution of the Housemarque gameplay-first experience,” the team have taken everything that worked with Returnal and put those learnings into this new IP, writing:

“After Returnal we knew we had created something special and award-winning, but we also knew we wanted Returnal to stand on its own. With this in mind, we decided to create a new IP which evolves our deep third-person action and mysterious storytelling.”

Set to arrive some time in 2026, Saros looks to be offering a slightly different take to the rogue-like genre when compared to Returnal, with the title said to include “permanent resources and progression making every death valuable.”

Returnal was an infinitely replayable and addictive experience when it released in 2021, thanks to smooth gameplay; fast-paced action and a haunting soundtrack – and so if Saros is even half as good as their last game, then Housemarque could have another major hit on their hands.
