Foamstars free-to-play relaunch now live

Back in late August, Square Enix announced that their Splatoon-like multiplayer shooter ‘Foamstars’ would be going free-to-play following a less-than-stellar stint as a premium priced product upon its launch back in February. Foamstars now has a second chance at life, as the game has officially gone free to play.

In going to the PlayStation Store, you can now find Foamstars available as a free-to-play package – meaning you also no longer need a PS Plus subscription to play it online.  Releasing the patch notes to their support site, the team at Square Enix detailed all the changes coming as a result of this relaunch, saying:

“Starting from this update, FOAMSTARS will be free to play. The DIAMOND JAM Season adds Diamond Chips, which can be earned by playing and then traded for items. There are also five new maps for Smash the Star and a new boss battle for Squad Mission!”

The full list of fixes and additions (including a bunch of late-game challenges) can be found HERE, but for our purposes, the most interesting change is the addition of the new Diamond Chips and a Premium Pass – which seem to be Square’s way of monetising the now-F2P title.

Of course, as the game was previously a premium product, all those who owned the game prior to its free-to-play relaunch will receive a number of exclusive cosmetics, namely:

  • 12 exclusive colour-variant Bubble Beastie skins
  • 1 exclusive Slideboard design
  • 1 title: “Legacy”

As the game is not available on PC, we have no way to track how many players have flocked to the game in the hours following its relaunch. We’ll have to wait and see whether Square Enix chooses to share any numbers in the near future.
