Final Fantasy XVI is 95% complete

Fans have been eagerly anticipating Final Fantasy XVI ever since it was first unveiled all the way back in September 2020. Announced to be releasing some time in mid-2023, it seems as though the team at Square Enix are more than equipped to meet this date, with development on Final Fantasy XVI said to be 95% complete.

As part of an interview conducted by Japanese magazine Famitsu – and as translated by ResetEra user ‘modiz’ – Final Fantasy XVI’s game director Hiroshi Takai was asked “By the way, what is the current development status [of FFXVI]?” to which Takai responded “About 95%.”

Offering more details on development, Takai revealed that “The current situation is that we play through the game day by day, tweak the rough parts, and brush up the parts that have flaws in performance or drawing. The rest is bugfixing.”

When asked about the potential release date for Final Fantasy XVI, given its current developmental status, game producer Naoki Yoshida responded: “We plan to release the information again later this year, so I think we can say it at that time. I don't think it's going to be over the summer, so I think it's okay (laughs). I've been used to the development environment for online games for the past few years, so I was a little surprised that I had to master it so quickly (bitter smile).”

Yoshida continued: “If you think about producing physical discs, shipping them all over the world, and so on, it takes several months of physical time after mastering up. When I say that the development status is 90% and 50%, I think there will be voices saying ‘Please release it immediately’, but there are such circumstances.”

Regardless of just how accurate that 95% figure is, it is encouraging to see that the team feels confident in the product, and that we are at most two months away from knowing FFXVI’s official release date.
