FIFA 23 to feature major overhauls

EA’s annual FIFA franchise has been criticised lately for its lack of innovation and new content due in part to its annual release. While the annual rate of release is continuing, FIFA 23 will reportedly come with some major new features.

As reported by industry insider Tom Henderson and xfire, FIFA 23 will arrive with cross-play for the first time in the franchise’s history – allowing for increased longevity of the games thanks to a larger player pool. Interestingly, Henderson only mentions Xbox, PlayStation and PC, suggesting that the Switch version may not support the feature.

Perhaps even bigger news is the fact that FIFA 23 is said to feature both the men’s and women’s World Cups for the first time, helping to push the FIFA franchise towards equality (as the 2019 Women’s World Cup was watched by over a Billion people).

At the same time, Henderson reported that Russian teams will be removed from current FIFA titles due to the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia’s Vladamir Putin. This is an odd decision by EA – especially as there is very little linkage between the two – but it is representative of the confusing times that we are in.
