Elden Ring outsells Call of Duty to be biggest game of past 12 months

The video games industry is an ever-evolving place, but one of its core truths is the fact that no matter how good a game is, it will likely be outsold by that year’s Call of Duty. This has been the case since the FPS hit its stride in the late 2000s – with very few exceptions. Elden Ring is now one such exception.

Each month, the NPD Group releases their monthly statistics on the video games market in the US – the second biggest single market for video games in the world. The NPD’s for April 2022 have now been released and according to NPD’s  Matt Piscatella:

“Elden Ring was the 2nd best-selling title of April 2022 [in the US]. Elden Ring remains the best-selling game of 2022 year-to-date and has surpassed Call of Duty: Vanguard to become the best-selling premium game of the trailing 12-month period ending April 2022.”

Shortly after the game was first released, it was announced that Elden Ring had become the best selling game of 2022 with 12 million copies sold. That being said, Call of Duty still reigned supreme when it came to sales across the previous 12 months (as Vanguard launched in 2021). To see Elden Ring now surpass Call of Duty on multiple fronts is impressive indeed.

With Elden Ring having sold a total of 13.4 million copies as of the 31st of March, it will be interesting to see how the game’s continually strong performance will affect total sales during the next fiscal Quarter report.
