Deep Rock Galactic surpasses 8 million copies sold

Deep Rock Galactic is a fun co-op first-person shooter which sees players working together to mine underground resources in fully-destructible environments, all the while trying to hold back the horde of enemies coming your way. Since its Early Access release in 2018, the game has sold better and better each year – with it having now surpassed 8 million copies.

Making the announcement on Steam, the studio behind Deep Rock Galactic – Ghost Ship Games – released their annual year-in-review, saying “2023 was a terrific year for Deep Rock Galactic, and for the crew at Ghost Ship Games too. We decided to recap the year (as usual) by digging deep in the data mines, and pulling up the most exciting, interesting, exciting, and silly statistics we could find, to understand Deep Rock Galactic by the numbers.”

With that, the team shared an extensive infographic which detailed everything from user engagement to social media stats to the top causes of death in-game. Of course, by far the most impressive stat was the fact that Deep Rock Galactic has sold over 8 million copies.

As they have done previously, the team released a full breakdown of the game’s sales by year, revealing that 2023 was the title’s highest performing period yet – having sold a total of 2,567,251 copies last year. For context, the number of copies sold in previous years can be seen below:

  • 2018 – 502,312 copies
  • 2019 – 404,213 copies
  • 2020 – 1,180,595 copies
  • 2021 – 1,385,985 copies
  • 2022 – 2,340,934 copies

Seeing Deep Rock Galactic’s sales grow in such a way is impressive indeed, especially as the game was given away for free as part of PlayStation Plus and is available on Xbox Game Pass – meaning the total list of players is much higher than the number of copies sold.

With multiple spin-off games currently in the works, it will be interesting to see whether Deep Rock Galactic has its biggest year once again in 2024.
