Black Ops Cold War adds an FOV slider to all platforms

While most modern video games offer a field of view slider on PC, allowing players to customise how much peripheral vision is afforded to them when playing a game, console titles have rarely been offered the option. Be it for performance reasons or otherwise, only a handful of titles have brought the feature to consoles. For the first time in the franchise’s history however, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will offer an FOV slider on all consoles.

On its website, Treyarch announced that “We’re extremely excited to bring the Field of View (FOV) slider feature to all platforms for the first time in a Black Ops game, and you’ll be able to try it out during the Beta.”

This move is claimed to be in support of “optimizing Black Ops Cold War for a globally connected, cross-play experience, and the team is dedicated to providing the best performance possible for this feature across all platforms at launch. Give it a shot this weekend and see which setting feels right for you.”

For many different people, FOV sliders can serve different purposes. For some, low FOVs can cause discomfort, for others, a wider FOV offers a more competitive edge, while some simply prefer the way it looks.

All of these reasons are valid, and all of them apply to both PC and console players. It is therefore encouraging to see Treyarch add the functionality to all consoles including the current-gen PS4 and Xbox One. Hopefully this move sets a precedent for many more console titles in the future.
