As video games have gotten bigger, prettier and more complex, their file sizes have increased in tow. One such prime suspect is the Call of Duty series, whose popularity in combination with ballooning file sizes saw it break ISP data traffic records back in 2022. With the launch of Call of Duty Black Ops 6, they’ve done it again.

As shared by EE/BT (and reported by ispreview), the launch of Call of Duty Black Ops 6 saw the ISP undergo “the biggest ever amount of gaming traffic for a game launch” – peaking on the 21st of October during the game’s pre-load period.

Though no exact figures were shared, Xbox Live traffic increased by 144% during the period as a result of Black Ops 6’s inclusion in Game Pass Ultimate.

As mentioned, this isn’t the first time that Call of Duty has broken such a record, with Virgin Media reporting back in November 2022 that it had its busiest day ever for gaming thanks to the launch of warzone 2.0.

While not an apples-to-apples comparison due to being a different network, Virgin claimed that over 138 Petabytes of data was downloaded during its peak 24 hour period. It’ll be interesting to see whether BT winds up sharing more concrete figures.
