Battletoads announces surprise August release date

Battletoads is one of Rare’s oldest and most well-known video games. The most recent entry in the beat ‘em up platformer franchise was unveiled back at E3 2018, with very little information following since – aside from a gameplay trailer at E3 2019. Now, in a surprise announcement Microsoft released a new trailer, showcasing more gameplay alongside an official release date of August 2020.

Posted on its socials, Xbox announced that “The Battletoads are back! Join Rash, Zitz and Pimple as they smash, stomp, drill, turbo bike, leap, shoot and generally be toadally awesome in their all-new, action-packed, multi-genre adventure of choreographed chaos! Battletoads launches on Xbox, Windows 10, Xbox Game Pass and Steam on August 20th. Developed by Dlala Studios in partnership with Rare.”

Alongside the release date announcement was a new trailer, which showcased more gameplay and some of the levels that players will traverse, while detailing brief story snippets – showing the battletoads working together to defeat the Topians.

When Battletoads was made playable at Microsoft’s X019 convention, some players expressed concerns regarding the gameplay mechanics and feel. Perhaps it is for that reason that Microsoft chose to go dark or so long with the title.

Regardless, fans won’t have too long to wait to get their hands on Battletoads, as it’ll be releasing on the 20th of August for both Xbox One and PC, as well as being available day-and-date on Xbox Game Pass. With Battletoads being the first new entry in the series in 26 years, it’ll be interesting to see the reception to the game following its launch in less than 3 weeks.
