Developed by a single person, Balatro is a unique poker-themed rogue-like deckbuilder which hooked many players upon its initial release back in February of this year. Since then, the game has only grown in popularity – with its recent Game of the Year nomination seemingly helping to push the title to 3.5 million copies sold.
Making the announcement on Twitter, the studio behind Balatro – LocalThunk – shared this latest impressive milestone, writing “LocalThunk: Just gonna make a game for myself and a few friends. Also LocalThunk: 3,500,000 units sold.”
For context, Balatro first came out on PC and consoles back in February, selling over 1 million units in its first month.
Talk surrounding the game wound down a bit in the months following, but was shot back into the limelight with the release of the mobile version this past September, and its subsequent GOTY nomination at the Game Awards – going on to dethrone Minecraft from its top spot on the mobile charts which it had held for 1,645 days.
With the 2024 Game Awards less than 24 hours away, it will be interesting to see just how quickly Balatro manages to hit its next major sales milestone – especially if it does win Game of the Year.
